Mystic Aquarium Empowers Diversity and Inclusion in STEM Fields through Women in Science Day

August 29, 2023

Mystic, CT – Mystic Aquarium hosted its 7th annual Women in Science Day on August 17, a unique event highlighting the achievements of Mystic Aquarium's scientific experts, showcasing women of achievement from the local scientific community.

Mystic Aquarium's Women in Science Day serves as a platform to celebrate the accomplishments of women scientists, researchers, and professionals, shedding light on the pivotal contributions of women in STEM careers and inspiring the next generation of scientists.

"Women in Science Day at Mystic Aquarium is a powerful reminder of the crucial role women play in shaping the future of STEM," said Kelly Matis, Vice President of Education and Conservation at Mystic Aquarium. "By highlighting diverse career paths and real-world impacts, we aim to inspire young minds and bridge the gender gap in these critical fields."

The event provides aspiring scientists with firsthand insights into various scientific disciplines and the pathways to pursuing fulfilling careers. The featured women scientists engage attendees with hands-on demonstrations, interactive activities, and insightful presentations. Visitors have the unique opportunity to interact with professionals at various stages of their careers, including college interns, graduate students, and even high school students.

This year's Women in Science Day welcomed 18 outside organizations to the Mystic Aquarium campus. These organizations joined forces with the Aquarium's zoological operations, research, and education teams to showcase the importance of diversity and inclusion in science. More than 4,000 guests attended the event.

Both the teams at Mystic Aquarium and the external organizations underscored the significance of diverse representation, emphasizing their shared commitment to creating accessible career paths within their respective organizations. For certain participants, diversity served as the central theme, reflecting the essence of their programs. Some programs featured Indigenous women who advocate for integrating traditional ecological knowledge with modern Western scientific practices. On a broader scale, other organizations shed light on the diverse array of communities affected by the challenges of climate change, advocating for the pivotal role of a diverse STEM workforce in formulating and implementing effective solutions.

"Diversity is not only about gender; it encompasses many perspectives and backgrounds that enrich scientific exploration," noted Matis. "Mystic Aquarium's Women in Science Day goes beyond highlighting individual achievements; it promotes a vision where inclusivity drives innovation."

Mystic Aquarium remains steadfast in its commitment to making STEM careers open to everyone. Through Women in SciencDay, the institution inspires, educates, and empowers individuals to pursue their passions and contribute meaningfully to the scientific community.

The event was sponsored by Revolution Wind and the Petit Family Foundation.
