Indigenous Youth Summer STEM Program
Through the collaborative efforts from Mystic Aquarium, U.S. Fish and Wildlife, Tomaquag Museum, the Southern RI Conservation District, and other partners throughout Rhode Island, and funding from Ocean Coalition, we are happy to offer a FREE 3 week, in person STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) summer program for Indigenous Youth! The Indigenous Youth Summer STEM program will focus on conservation, coastal field studies, mentoring, career exploration, environmental stewardship, cultural traditions, traditional ecological knowledge and more!
Program Location (Pick Up/Drop-off location): USFWS Kettle Pond Visitor Center, 50 Bend Rd, Charlestown, RI 02813
Program Drop-off time: 8am
Program Pick-up: 3pm
Program Dates: July 8th - July 26th (Monday-Friday)
Program Ages : 6 years old-18 years old (Any Indigenous Youth entering 1st-12th grade)
STEM Mentees (1st-6th grade): will explore the world of water and its interconnectedness- through games, storytelling, STEM activities, and experiments, they will deepen their understanding about what a watershed is, the importance of water conservation and how we are connected to water. Through cultural and scientific identification and connection, mentees will work in small groups and conduct field studies.
Peer Mentors (7-12th grade): will help to facilitate and work on their leadership skills during activities with their small group of mentees. Peer Mentors will help make connections and will receive volunteer hours AND incentives upon the end of the program.
**Youth will be grouped together. For group activities there will be older peer mentors paired with younger mentees to promote leadership skills among the older mentors.
