Mystic Aquarium to Offer Complimentary Weekday Admission to Government Employees During Shutdown

Mystic, Conn. (January 22, 2019): Mystic Aquarium recently announced that it would provide government employees affected by the shutdown the opportunity to visit, Monday through Friday, through the duration of the shutdown. The offer is available now to all furloughed government employees with valid identification.

“Our local community is directly impacted by the government shutdown, most notably through the Coast Guard and the Naval Submarine Base,” said Roslyn Gilhuly, Senior Vice President of External Relations. “We have always taken great pride in our role not only in the community but as a destination for family fun and learning. We hope to be able to provide a fun diversion during what is undoubtedly a stressful time for local families.”

Indoor and outdoor exhibits are open from 10am to 5pm and provide unique and up-close opportunities to see penguins, sharks, New England’s only belugas and so much more including newcomer Steller sea lions Eden and Perl. Mystic Aquarium is one of only two organizations in the United States and the only one in the Continental U.S. to have Steller sea lions.

Mystic Aquarium provides hours of family fun and education that also includes Jurassic Giants: A Dinosaur Adventure, a complimentary California sea lion show and a number of hands-on interactive experiences. With over 300 species of marine animals, there is adventure at every turn.

Complimentary weekday general admission is available to the government employee (with a valid work ID) at Mystic Aquarium’s main ticket gate through the duration of the government shutdown.

Last week, Mystic Aquarium presented 100 complimentary tickets to the United Way of Southern Connecticut to distribute as part of their ongoing supply campaign at the Coast Guard Academy.

Mystic Aquarium, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, is counted among the nation’s leading aquariums with more than 300 species and an extensive collection of marine mammals, including New England’s only belugas.
