Discover Long Island Sound Exhibit to Educate, Inspire & Entertain

Waterford, Conn. (May 24, 2018): Just in time for their Long Island Sound Day celebration, Mystic Aquarium joined with Dominion Energy, owner and operator of Millstone Power Station, to announce the opening of a new and interactive exhibit, Discover Long Island Sound.  Following the announcement, those in attendance boarded one of Dominion’s research vessels to enjoy the inspiration for the new exhibit-Long Island Sound.

Mystic Aquarium knows that at the heart of conservation is action. With nearly 45 years of experience inspiring action, Mystic Aquarium looks to make a strong, lasting and profound impact on Long Island Sound by engaging and entertaining the over 735,000 annual guests.

”Dominion Energy is honored to support this new exhibit that teaches the public about Long Island Sound, a precious resource that we all share,”  said John Swenarton, staff biologist at Millstone Power Station’s Environmental Laboratory. “Our employees are committed to protecting the environment, and closely monitoring and safeguarding Long Island Sound’s health, helping to ensure its future for everyone to enjoy.”

Discover Long Island Sound is made possible thanks to the funding from Dominion Energy, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, National Fish & Wildlife Foundation and Fatima Matos and Hans Rollema.

“We are excited to provide opportunities through this exhibit for guests to have meaningful experiences in connection to Long Island Sound. It is our goal to increase public knowledge of and appreciation for Long Island Sound and its natural resources and to inspire people to become good environmental stewards of this critical ecosystem,” said Dr. Stephen M. Coan, Mystic Aquarium’s President and CEO.

Discover Long Island Sound is an immersive experience that highlights our local estuary through digital interactives, a hands-on watershed model and a touch experience with native invertebrates. Children and adults alike will enjoy the nearly 12 foot long water table complete with a waterwheel, rain cloud and interactive dams.

The interactive water table models the Connecticut River watershed and offers a tactile and free-play experience, especially for younger guests, and illustrates the connections, dynamics, and human impacts from rivers to the sea.

Local invertebrates in the touch experience will include horseshoe crabs, sea stars, purple urchins, whelks and a variety of crab species.  Additionally, guests get an up-close look at species like scup, North American lobster and more.

Mystic Aquarium is proud to host Long Island Sound Day Celebrations on May 25 & 26 from 10:00am to 2:00pm each day. Families can enjoy hands-on activities, create a craft and speak with visiting environmental organizations or attend a special program; all with the goal of learning more about our precious Long Island Sound.  Activities are included with Aquarium admission.
