Towei & Wawrzynowski Overall 5K Winners
Mystic, Conn. (October 15, 2016) – Over 600 participants gathered at Mystic Aquarium this morning to participate in the 10th Annual Penguin Run/Walk in support of the conservation efforts of the endangered African penguin. Taking home top honors in the 5K were Jason Towei of Vernon, CT, and Lisa Wawrzynowski of Newington CT. Special honors also went to the Pawcatuck Middle School teams.
The annual event features a 5-kilomater run, two-mile family-friendly walk and a quarter-mile kid’s race.
The African penguin, while one of the most popular species at Mystic Aquarium, is also at the highest risk of extinction in the animal kingdom. The wild population of African penguins has declined by 70% over the past 10 years.
In partnership with The Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB), Mystic Aquarium and other Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) accredited institutions strive every day to protect this species by participating in the annual Chick Rearing/Bolstering project assisting abandoned, weak chicks and rearing chicks from eggs.
Mystic Aquarium is proud to be a Project Coordinator in the vitally important AZA African penguin Species Survival Plan (SSP) Sustainability Project as part of AZA’s SAFE (Saving Animals from Extinction) collaborative approach to conservation. Mystic Aquarium is also a collaborator in other SAFE projects that includes disaster response, health monitoring and rehabilitation, public engagement and artificial nest development.
The funds raised by today’s 10th Annual Run/Walk for the Penguins participants will help support Mystic Aquarium’s mission to protect our ocean planet and its inhabitants-like the endangered African penguin.
All participants received complimentary admission to the Mystic Aquarium to see New England’s only beluga whales and over 300 species in indoor/outdoor exhibits plus all the activities of Harvest Happenings.
