HARP SEAL RELEASE BY MYSTIC AQUARIUM’S ANIMAL RESCUE PROGRAM PROVIDES EARLY START FOR MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND CELEBRATIONS
Mystic, Conn. (May 26, 2016) – As Mystic Aquarium ramps up for a busy holiday weekend that includes a Military Appreciation promotion, the Mystic-Wide Cleanup, Long Island Sound Day celebrations and the much anticipated opening of frogs!, the Animal Rescue Program kicked-off this important celebration with the release of Moonstone, a rescued harp seal.
Earlier this morning, a small group of Aquarium staff and volunteers, along with a few beachgoers, celebrated the return of a young harp seal to the ocean. An approximately 1-2 year old female, Moonstone was rescued in Narragansett, RI on April 16, 2016. Weighing 84 pounds upon arrival to Mystic Aquarium’s Animal Rescue Clinic, she was found severely dehydrated with rocks in her stomach. Fortunately, surgery was not required and Moonstone made a quick recovery, maintaining her healthy weight of 84 pounds throughout her rehabilitation.
The Memorial Day weekend celebration continues at Mystic Aquarium. Visit New England’s hands-on aquarium and see red lobsters, white belugas, blue frogs and more. Plus, the community is invited to join in the Mystic-Wide Cleanup taking place throughout Mystic on Friday. Then on Saturday, hop in to the newest exhibit, frogs!, where you can look through, crawl under and pop into the environments of over 30 different species of frogs and amphibians.
Also taking place Saturday, Mystic Aquarium celebrates Long Island Sound Day by bringing the important elements of our Sound to you through hands-on and interactive experiences. Plus, all active-duty and retired U.S. military personnel receive free admission and dependents enjoy discounted admission with Military ID starting Saturday, May 28 through Monday, May 30.
