MYSTIC, Conn., [April 24, 2026] — Mystic Aquarium President and CEO Susette Tibus has announced that she will be transitioning from day-to-day leadership of the Aquarium and return to her business, Simply Majestic, and to philanthropic work, following a period of service that helped guide the organization through a pivotal chapter in its history. Tibus has led the Mystic Aquarium since 2023, after previously serving on its Board of Trustees, including as vice chair.

The Mystic Aquarium Board of Trustees has launched a national search for the organization’s next chief executive. Board Chair George Milne said the Board will select a search firm to help identify the Aquarium’s next leader.

“I love my team here and love what we’ve accomplished together, and now it's time for me to transition back into running my business,” said Tibus.“These are my people, and I am so proud of all they have accomplished. The Aquarium team is working well together, and this talented group has grown into a powerful unit.”

Tibus will depart Mystic Aquarium after the installation of the next CEO, expected near the end of the year. She remains committed to seeing the institution through its upcoming Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) re-accreditation process and will continue to support Mystic Aquarium and its programs alongside her family thereafter.

A long-time community leader, Tibus joined the Mystic Aquarium Board in 2008 after years of volunteer service. On the Board, she served on multiple committees and as Board Vice Chair. When the previous President and CEO departed, the Board asked her to step in to lead at a critical moment for the organization. She devoted herself to helping restore and strengthen the Aquarium’s financial footing, drawing on her experience as a business owner and civic leader.

During her tenure, Mystic Aquarium sharpened its strategic direction and mission focus. It laid the groundwork for its next chapter of leadership, and advanced major initiatives to strengthen the campus and position the institution for future growth, including $14 million invested in capital improvements, the purchase of an adjacent building for future expansion, and continued development of the Aquarium’s campus.

“Susette answered the call when Mystic Aquarium needed her,” said Milne. “Her steady leadership, deep commitment to this community, and practical business experience helped position the Aquarium for the future.
