Understanding a Challenging Disease

Lysosomal storage diseases are a group of genetic metabolic disorders that have been documented in many species, including beluga whales. In belugas, the disease causes progressive damage to the brain and nervous system. It is fatal, incurable, and worsens over time.

One of the greatest challenges researchers and veterinarians face is that the disease has historically been very difficult to diagnose. Currently, a definitive diagnosis can only be confirmed after an animal has died, limiting opportunities for early intervention, care planning, and disease management.

Mystic Aquarium's commitment to this research is deeply connected to its experience caring for five beluga whales rescued from Marineland Canada several years ago.

While under Mystic Aquarium's care, two of those whales developed symptoms that could not be definitively explained at the time. Following their deaths, both whales were diagnosed with lysosomal storage disease—a diagnosis that could only be confirmed through postmortem examination.

Their cases highlighted one of the most significant challenges associated with this disease: there is currently no reliable way to diagnose it in living beluga whales. By the time the disease is confirmed, it is too late to use that information to guide treatment, management, or future care decisions.

The loss of these whales underscored the urgent need for scientific advancement in this area. It became clear that researchers needed better tools to recognize the disease earlier, understand how it progresses, and identify potential indicators before symptoms become severe.

Today, that experience serves as a driving force behind the collaborative research effort between Mystic Aquarium and Johns Hopkins Medicine, helping move the field toward earlier detection and a better understanding of this devastating disease.

Building a More Complete Picture

The goal of the research is straightforward but ambitious: develop a way to identify lysosomal storage disease in living beluga whales before the disease reaches its later stages.

To accomplish this, researchers are bringing together multiple sources of information, including:
