What Would You Name a Beluga?

The Beluga Raffle

We are offering a lucky winner the opportunity to name the fourth whale through our beluga raffle! Tickets can be purchased for $10 online or as part of the “Golden Ticket” admission package.  We will draw the winning raffle ticket on December 31st.

Why We Name the Belugas

As a common practice in the marine science world, Mystic Aquarium is welcoming the belugas to their new home with new names, and we are inviting the public to participate in the naming process. We will be auctioning off naming rights for three of the belugas and the fourth name will come from a lucky raffle winner. Money raised from the auction and raffle will directly contribute to the care of these animals. Caring for and providing the best home for belugas. is very expensive: food and veterinary services alone costs the Aquarium $2-million annually alone! There are also high costs associated with running and maintaining their 750,000-gallon outdoor habitat, a specially-engineered environment designed to provide optimal access for care and research, and the largest of its kind in the country.

In May 2021, Mystic Aquarium transported belugas from another facility to its campus in Connecticut. This journey set in motion efforts to save wild belugas and preserve the species for the future. As a global leader and pioneer of beluga research, the aquarium has research permits from the United States and Canadian federal governments. These government entities recognize human activity is affecting cetaceans (whales, dolphins, and porpoises) and contributes to the rapid decline in beluga populations. Mystic Aquarium is taking the initiative to figure out how to save critically endangered populations by developing data, contributing to technology development, and guiding protective legislation. These whales have the best possible life at Mystic, and they are changing the lives of their wild counterparts.
