The Definition of Dedication as Displayed by Mystic Aquarium’s Animal Rescue Team
Mystic, Conn. (July 23, 2019) – Dedication, according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, is defined as self-sacrificing devotion and loyalty. It is also a word frequently used to describe the staff, interns and volunteers who work for Mystic Aquarium’s Animal Rescue Program.
Earlier this morning, the Animal Rescue Team’s dedication shone bright in spite of the torrential rain.
“Our veterinary team gave this seal a clean bill of health following his rehabilitation with us,” said Sarah Callan, Assistant Manager of the Animal Rescue Program. “Snow, sun, extreme rain, it doesn’t bother us – as long as the elements are safe for the animal and our team, nothing can keep us from getting a healthy seal back to its natural habitat.”
Einstein, a young male gray seal, was rescued in early May by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW). Found in Provincetown, MA, he was admitted to the Aquarium’s Animal Rescue Clinic to receive care for nasal discharge and minor wounds.
The team drove Einstein, named for the 2019 seal release season’s theme of famous authors, in their fully-outfitted animal rescue vehicle to a private shoreline location in North Kingstown, RI; providing the seal with a safe space to return to the ocean during peak beach season.
“We keep a close eye on the weather and surf conditions leading up to and including release day and always keep the safety of the animal a priority,” continued Callan. “These animals are hardy. Once they dive in and swim past the breaking point, they’re gone! The waves from today’s weather didn’t faze Einstein one bit.”
While the Aquarium’s on-site Animal Rescue Clinic is less one seal, their team continues to work around-the-clock tending to a full house. Caring for these animals with the ultimate goal of releasing them back into their natural habitat comes at a cost.
That is why events like Mystic Aquarium’s Seals on the Rocks, presented by Goslings, are vital to supporting the conservation of species, like our local seal populations. Taking place this Friday at Mystic Aquarium, the annual fundraiser features live music, local craft beer and wine tastings, refreshments and a silent auction – all in support of the Animal Rescue Program’s efforts to rescue, rehabilitate and ultimately release stranded or injured marine mammals. And much like the weather at today’s release, guests can expect Seals on the Rocks to be a bit Dark ‘n Stormy®, that is, in the form of the Goslings signature cocktail at Friday nights 21+ event.
