Baby Born Closest to Aquarium’s Seal Pup Receives Special ‘Seal-abratory’ Membership
Mystic, Conn. (June 20, 2019): Early in the morning on June 9, members of Mystic Aquarium’s animal care team came to work and discovered a fluffy little surprise.
Pearl, one of the Aquarium’s resident harbor seals, delivered her first pup when staff were in between ‘pup watch’ shifts. Now one-and-a-half weeks old, Pearl and pup are bonding behind-the-scenes.
“For a first-time Mother, Pearl is doing everything right,” said Dr. Jen Flower, Chief Clinical Veterinarian at Mystic Aquarium. “She’s helped her little boy learn how to swim, positions herself just right when nursing and keeps a close yet trusting eye on him when our team performs routine exams. It’s exciting to see how much they both have grown since his birth!”
As part of Mystic Aquarium’s pregnancy announcement, the team partnered with Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London. Following Pearl’s delivery, Mystic Aquarium made their own ‘special delivery’ to the hospital on June 11; awarding new Mom Shelby Noyce of New London with a reusable bag filled with gifts including a complimentary year-long membership to the Aquarium. Her daughter, who arrived in the early afternoon on June 9, was the hospital’s first born closest to the birth of Pearl’s pup.
“Mom is appreciative,” said Michael O’Farrell, Director of Public Relations at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital of Noyce’s reaction to her surprise gift from Mystic Aquarium.
“I could tell from our phone conversation that Shelby was so excited about the gift,” added Stevi Bramich, Public Relations Coordinator at Mystic Aquarium. “She was blessed with a beautiful little girl and was beyond surprised when her nurses delivered our gift, all because her daughter arrived around the same time as our harbor seal pup – not every parent can add that sentiment to their baby memory book!”
