President’s Blog: March 27, 2018

Dear Friend:

Much is happening and I want to share this update with you.

Last Saturday I was very pleased to welcome His Excellency, Antonio Gutteres, the ninth Secretary General of the United Nations, to Mystic Aquarium.

The Secretary General was very interested in discussing issues related to mass extinction which is very timely given the opening of our new exhibit on dinosaurs.

I enjoyed and appreciated the opportunity to showcase our mission programs to the Secretary General.  Mary Ellen Mateleska, Melanie Evans and the Guest Services and Zoological Operations teams did an outstanding job of engaging him (and the phalanx of UN security agents accompanying him) with our animals and exhibits.  Special thanks to Director of Security and Safety Nate Fague who coordinated with local and other law enforcement agencies.

After learning about our work with the rescue, rehabilitation and conservation of animals, the Secretary General received a sneak preview of “Jurassic Giants: A Dinosaur Adventure” which opens April 7th.  Here is a link which appeared in The Day about the exhibit:

Special thanks to the Mosey Family for their primary sponsorship of the exhibit.  Also, we are very appreciative to Frontier Communications and NBC 30 who are sponsoring media outreach.

Here are some images captured by our photographer, Cheryl Miller:

The Foxwoods Marine Theater underwent large scale maintenance during the months of January and February.  While most of the work involved infrastructure repairs, a significant improvement to the glass viewing area on the main Aquarium floor was achieved.  Our popular Sea Lion show, written, produced and directed by the Eugene O’Neil Theater Center has resumed with limited showings while the sea lions are re-acclimated to the habitat.

Here are some images of the construction:

New construction on the Milne Center has begun. This $8 million project will link the new building to the renovated Wiederhold Veterinary Care Facility and include new classrooms, an auditorium and animal quarantine facility.  Construction is expected to be completed by early January 2019.

Finally, I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Larry Rivarde as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer.  Larry has been with Mystic Aquarium since 2015 as Senior Vice President for Zoological Operations.

Larry Rivarde appointed Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer

Over the past two years at Mystic Aquarium, he has bolstered the organization’s animal collection, opening three new exhibits and working to assure the long-term viability of the organization’s Beluga whale collection.  He also leads the Aquarium’s diversity and inclusion initiatives.

We are very fortunate to have Larry on our team to welcome him into this key role in leading Mystic Aquarium forward.

See you all soon!
