Strut your stuff at Mystic Aquarium’s 8th Annual Run/Walk for the Penguins on October 18. This popular event is followed by light refreshments and a day full of fun at the Aquarium – including a chance to watch our penguins do a short race themselves. Every step you take during the 5k run or two-mile walk helps benefit the endangered African penguin. Walk participants are welcome to bring strollers and dogs during this family-friendly event. To show our gratitude for your participation, all registrants receive free aquarium admission on race day and top fundraisers receive prizes! Click here to register!
African penguins are an endangered species and the population continues to decline. In 2010, researchers reported that the wild population was estimated to be 21,000 pairs. At a 2013 international penguin conference biologists reduced their estimates to only 19,000 pairs. The population has declined by 70% in the last 10 years alone and faces extinction in the wild.
In partnership with our South African partner, SANCCOB, Mystic Aquarium strives to protect this species through research, education and conservation efforts in Mystic and South Africa.
