Five happily rehabilitated raptors descend on Mystic Aquarium for a special Birds of Prey Summer Series, presented in conjunction with the Audubon Society of Rhode Island, on July 2, 9, 30, Aug. 13 and Sept. 3 at 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m..

A Red-Tailed Hawk, Eastern Screech Owl, American Kestrel, two Barred Owls and a Great Horned Owl will appear on the arms of Audubon educators to demonstrate the remarkable beauty and abilities of these incredible birds.

Each of them was rescued after a life-threatening injury and nursed back to health by caring individuals and organizations. The Great Horned Owl, 15 years old, came to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island all the way from Alaska after he was wounded by a gunshot as a young fledgling and his wing amputated. Three were hit by cars; one apparently fell from her nest as a baby.

Though most of these rehabbed raptors can no longer fly, the programs on July 2, 9, 30, Aug. 13 and Sept. 3 will include an on-the-glove presentation with three different birds of prey. Audubon educators will discuss biological and sensory facts of these proud hunting species, and host a Q&A session with audience members.

The 30 to 45-minute programs will kick off each Saturday at 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. on the Sea School Green stage. The program is included in the regular price of Mystic Aquarium admission.
