Titanic Writing Contest

Thank you to the more than 400 authors who entered the Titanic writing contest.  It was an extremely tough decision to make but the judges are pleased to announce the winner of the contest are:

  • Group 1: Grades 3-5 - Jackson Craig, Grade 4 from Hyman Fine School, Attleboro, MAs
  • Group 2: Grades 6-8 - Olivia Lyon, Grade 8 from West Side Middle School, Groton, CT

Please click the name of each winner to read their journal entry.

April 2012 marks the centenary of Titanic's maiden voyage and sinking. The Titanic Writing Contest asks students to imagine the excitement of the over 2,200 passengers and crew members as they boarded the “Unsinkable Ship” on its maiden voyage across the Atlantic and create a diary entry for April 10, 1912. Each journal entry should:

  • Contain accurate Titanic information
  • Include information about where the passenger is from and their background
  • Include why the passenger or crew member is on Titanic
  • Express the excitement of passenger and/or crew member
  • Not include information on the striking of the ice berg or sinking (remember this is just the first day of the voyage!)
  • Be no longer than 500 words
  • Be submitted as a Microsoft Word or PDF document

Winners: Winners of each age group will be announced on April 12, the day the new Ocean Exploration Center opens at Mystic Aquarium. The winning author of each category and their teacher will be contacted via phone and email no later than April 16.  Each winner and their classmates (up to 25 students and 5 chaperones for each class) will be awarded entry to Mystic Aquarium, a tour of the new Ocean Exploration Center and Titanic - 12,450 Feet Below, and a meet and greet opportunity with Dr. Robert Ballard, who discovered the wreck of Titanic! Winners must visit on Friday, May 4, 2012 for an opportunity to meet Dr. Ballard.

Judging Criteria: Submissions will be judged on writing style, research completed on Titanic and originality.
