Read the blog of three Mystic Aquarium staff members as they worked at the South African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) in South Africa November 2012 through January 2013. They were there to help hand-rear over 300 abandoned African penguin chicks and prepare them for survival in the ocean. The African penguin population is endangered and has declined over 60% since 2001.
Supervisor of Penguins and Pinnipeds Laurie Macha, Senior Trainer of Penguins and Pinnipeds Tracy Camp, and Penguin Trainer Josh Davis each spent two weeks at SANCCOB. Travel expenses for Laurie, Tracy and Josh were made possible through funds raised by Mystic Aquarium's annual Penguin Run/Walk held each October.

December 1 - Laurie Macha
I started my day at 7:30am by helping tube the early morning formulas. It wasn't five minutes into tubing when the syringe I was holding under my arm kind of fell. I felt something warm on my leg inside my coveralls. It was a few seconds before I realized that I the plunger fell out of the syringe and I filled my pants with formula. Yuck!

Ahhhhh. I slept in today until at least 6:30 am. I walked over to the pick n pay to pick up a drink for the boat release today and then headed over to SANCCOB a little early to take a few photos. It's been pretty hard to stop working and take photos. Venessa has been really great when I leave my camera out for her she pops by and takes random pictures of me at work. I spent a little time watching home pen get fed today and took some great photos of the Cape cormorant. They have beautiful green eyes! I got a chance to meet Columbine today, she's beautiful! I also went to pen 10 to see how they were doing and take some photos of 440. I hope to be able to send the photos in to show everyone so you can see how beautiful the chick is.

I started at 7:30am today to help with the early morning formula tubings. I went to pen 10 to check on 684 (the little one that vomited up the darrows and kept regurgitating the fish back up all day yesterday). All the chicks in pen 10D looked great, perky and alert. Candice was working on 10B and 10D formulas and I offered to help. I shared what I had experienced in that pen the past two days. We tubed all of the chicks and 684 handled it great! I was so excited; perhaps that little one just had a bad day yesterday. That's the second time that I had the opportunity to work with Candice. She has the most beautiful and warm smile and always makes me feel welcome. These little penguins are so fortunate to have such caring people helping them.

I went in at 7:30 today to help with the early formula feedings. After working in pen 10 yesterday, I was anxious to start my day. Yesterday was challenging with vomiting and lethargic chicks. We cut one of the formula feedings out on Saturday for two of the pens and limited them to one fish tale at the last fish feeding of the day. WOW! There is such a difference in all of the pens. The chicks took their first formula feeding remarkably.
