December 5, 2012 - Tracy Camp

Well, today I got to be back in pen three again. I was hoping that I would be so that I could master this routine and especially get another chance to build my confidence working with the pelican.

I spent the day there working alongside Romy, one of the staff members. Today was one of the first days, even though it was my sixth day working there, that I truly felt like I had a good handle on everything. I have all of the cleaning procedures down, feeding schedules and finally have also fully figured out the record keeping. Romy and I worked so quickly and well together that we were actually ahead of schedule for almost the whole day. It can be really easy to fall behind, so I would have been happy to just have been on time for once!

As for the pelican....Today I had no fear! I was able to do everything I needed to with him. He is getting much stronger too. I think that he will be ready to go soon. He was actively swimming around the pool, flapping his wings and of course trying to escape! He was supposed to be on a two fish limit per feed today. But he was searching all through the pool for more fish so we decided to see if he would eat more if offered. He ate everything we gave to him, six fish in one feed. Now he just needs a nice washing to get the oil off of his feathers so that he can fly again.

Today I was also glad to get to see 630 again. He was always sitting on my stool before I could even get to it. Little bugger! Although I must admit, 698 and 634 are also catching my attention lately in this pen.

Tomorrow I am excited to get to see a lunch time presentation given by Sharon from the SeaWorld parks on management of large colonies. I am also excited to see what new adventures tomorrow will bring!
