|While my husband got ready for work this morning, I was seven hours ahead of him in South Africa enjoying a sandwich at Cape Point with a fantastic view of ocean and mountains in front of me. Today was a day off from SANCCOB. I took in some of the sights since I have never been to South Africa before. The two places I was most excited to see: Boulders Beach where a colony of African penguins lives and Seal Island, home to cape fur Seals. The tour also included a drive through a nature preserve to get to the Cape of Good Hope and continued on until we reached Cape Point. I was so thrilled to finally see penguins in their own element. There were at least 100 penguins on the beach. A couple pairs appeared to be nesting on the beach. There was one molting penguin and one juvenile penguin barreling out of the water. I could have spent all day watching them. The fur seals were amazing and so active. There were many young ones swimming and playing about. I was surprised to learn I might get an opportunity to see baboons on the tour, and more and even more pleasantly surprised when it became a reality! It started with a pair sitting on a bench grooming each other, when from behind our van came an entire family with at least six youngsters. We also came upon Ostrich and the three remaining Zebras on the reserve. We were very fortunate to see the zebras. The water along the coast was some of the bluest I have ever seen and the sand, some of the whitest. We ended the tour with a stop at the Botanical gardens. I ended my day with a fantastic dinner at a restaurant called Moyo. The food was good, but the company was even better. I very much enjoyed spending time with my SANCCOB friends and look forward to returning to my duties tomorrow.|
