January 9, 2013 - Josh Davis

Since I only have a couple days off from working at SANCCOB left on my trip, I wanted to make sure I squeezed in some sightseeing. On the day of the petrel release we left on a boat tour of Robben Island from the Victoria and Alfred Harbor and I couldn't wait to get back there!

I walked to the local bus station and took a bus that brought me within a few blocks of the waterfront. It's a beautiful area filled with hotels, restaurants and shops situated right on the water. My first stop was the Two Oceans Aquarium. The name Two Oceans Aquarium comes from the fact that South Africa is considered the meeting place of the Atlantic and Indian oceans. It's much larger on the inside than it looks! Since I work at Mystic Aquarium I'm always curious to see how other aquariums are set up and this one kept me entertained for the entire morning. I saw all types of fish, sharks, reptiles and of course penguins! They have African penguins and Rockhopper penguins. I will admit, it made me miss the penguins back in Mystic.

I had lunch at a restaurant right on the water and I had a great view of the ships coming in and out of the harbor. It was the perfect spot. I finished the afternoon by shopping for some souvenirs at a local market. It took me a while, but I found the carved giraffe I was looking for!

I made sure to home in the early evening and get some rest because tomorrow it's back to work at SANCCOB!
