I continue to learn something new every day at SANCCOB. Today I learned how to handle and take care of two gannets in addition to the African penguin chicks, kelp gulls and petrel.
Gannets are beautiful seabirds with bright blue eyes and pale yellow feathers. Taking care of them is similar to taking care of the petrel in the sense that during their daily swims I was able to feed them by tossing them fish.
I also found out today that the petrel is going to be released tomorrow near Robben Island! Nicky checked him over and he met all three criteria for release. In order to be released a bird must be of a healthy weight, have waterproof feathers, and their blood results must show they are healthy. Since tomorrow is my day off Nicky not only offered to let me go, but to also be the one to release the petrel back into the ocean. I can't wait!
