Saving the Penguins in South Africa

Read the blog of three Mystic Aquarium staff members as they worked at the South African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) in South Africa November 2012 through January 2013. They were there to help hand-rear over 300 abandoned African penguin chicks and prepare them for survival in the ocean. The African penguin population is endangered and has declined over 60% since 2001.

Supervisor of Penguins and Pinnipeds Laurie Macha, Senior Trainer of Penguins and Pinnipeds Tracy Camp, and Penguin Trainer Josh Davis each spent two weeks at SANCCOB. Travel expenses for Laurie, Tracy and Josh were made possible through funds raised by Mystic Aquarium's annual Penguin Run/Walk held each October.

My last day at SANCCOB was a half day since my flight home was later that evening. The morning was still as busy as ever, but this morning Nicki took some time at the 8 a.m. meeting to thank me on behalf of SANCCOB for coming to help them out. They even gave me a SANCCOB t-shirt.

Today was my last day off so I hoped to make the most of it. Thanks to my new friends Carole and Nicki I was able to do just that. We left at 8 a.m. and headed straight to Table Mountain. I've been staring at this mountain the entire time I've been in South Africa hoping I'd get to see the view of Cape Town from the top of it.

I can't believe how quickly the days go by here at SANCCOB! With around 60 African penguin chicks in each pen plus a variety of flighted birds such as kelp gulls, cormorants and gannets, the work never stops. However, since there are two people assigned to each pen (when there are enough people) I've been able to meet people from all around the world.

January 9, 2013 - Josh Davis

Since I only have a couple days off from working at SANCCOB left on my trip, I wanted to make sure I squeezed in some sightseeing. On the day of the petrel release we left on a boat tour of Robben Island from the Victoria and Alfred Harbor and I couldn't wait to get back there!
