Mystic Aquarium

Mystic Aquarium’s African penguin colony made its Hollywood debut last weekend in Twentieth Century Fox’s “Mr. Popper’s Penguins.” Starring Jim Carrey, Carla Gugino and Angela Lansbury, the film is an adaptation of the 1938 children’s book about a businessman unexpectedly inheriting six penguins.

Five happily rehabilitated raptors descend on Mystic Aquarium for a special Birds of Prey Summer Series, presented in conjunction with the Audubon Society of Rhode Island, on July 2, 9, 30, Aug. 13 and Sept. 3 at 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. on the Sea School Green stage.

For the first time since its founding 38 years ago, Sea Research Foundation’s Mystic Aquarium admitted more than 18,000 guests from surrounding towns over three spring weekends as part of its “Your Town” free admission program. The estimated retail value of the free admissions is over $400,000.

On Monday, May 16, Mystic Aquarium’s Sea School Scholars were treated to a Skype®-based microscope lesson from University of California, Berkeley’s Dr. Daniel Fletcher, a world-renowned scientist in the field of microscopy. Among his other numerous achievements, Dr. Fletcher was formerly a White House Fellow and a Rhodes Scholar, and has committed his time and energy to developing the next generation of scientists and researchers.
