Proceeds to benefit Mystic Aquarium Mission Programs
Mystic, Conn. (April 11, 2016): As the Marine Mammal Center in California so aptly put it, California sea lions are “known for their intelligence, playfulness, and noisy barking.” It is no wonder that kids of all ages connect to the pack of sea lions that call Mystic Aquarium home.
The mission of Mystic Aquarium is to inspire people to care for and protect our ocean planet through conservation, education, and research. Mystic Aquarium supports this mission everyday by providing educational and scientific programming to advance stewardship with children and by connecting with adults and children alike to raise awareness about global conservation through meaningful and fun engagements designed to spark action.
Such engagement can be found on the evenings of Thursday, April 21 and Friday, April 22. Mystic Aquarium’s Ocean Blue Catering and TDP Art Studios of New London have teamed up to offer art instruction events for kids of all ages.
Adults can enjoy Canvas & Vino: Flippered Fine Art on Thursday, April 21 2016 from 6:30pm to 9:30pm. For children and families, there is Canvas & Cookies: Flippered Fine Art on Friday, April 22 2016 6:30pm to 9:30pm. These incredible events include a unique animal encounter, instructions for the creation of an animal-themed painting, supplies, and snacks. The 21+ Canvas & Vino event includes two glasses of wine. More information is available at MysticAquarium.org. Advance registration is required for both events.
As part of our commitment to enriching the lives of our animals, our Animal Care Team at Mystic Aquarium has taught the California sea lions to paint with a specially crafted brush placed within their mouths. This simple change to their daily routine along with the additional interaction with their trainers with whom they share a strong bond provides both mental stimulation and exercise. The animals benefit from various types of stimuli. Painting can help ensure an enriching and stimulating environment.
