MYSTIC, Conn. - In celebration of Earth Day, Dominion Resources presented Sea Research Foundation – parent organization of Mystic Aquarium, Institute for Exploration and Immersion Learning – with a $12,500 Earth Day environmental grant on April 22.
The grant supports the new “Faces of Our Planet” series, created by Sea Research Foundation, National Geographic Live and the Garde Arts Center to show the mysteries and discoveries of the world’s human, animal and geographic faces through film, live performance and multimedia presentations.
The series began on February 2 with a powerful performance by the Soweto Gospel Choir of South Africa, followed by a reception featuring penguins from Mystic Aquarium, and presentations by National Geographic filmmaker and Crittercam inventor Greg Marshall and National Geographic photographer Paul Nicklen. A presentation by famed oceanographer Dr. Robert Ballard on May 14 will complete the series’ first year.
Altogether, Dominion Resources is contributing $1.1 million to community-based environmental projects and organizations in 11 states where it provides energy in celebration of the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. The Earth Day environmental grants are part of Dominion’s overall commitment to volunteerism and philanthropy. In 2009, the company and its charitable foundation gave more than $20 million. Recent large grants include more than $1 million in 2008 to food banks in 14 states and $1 million to non-profit health clinics last year. Also in 2009 the company provided $4 million to EnergyShare, a program it created to help people in need pay heating and cooling bills.
