Thunder Bay

In June 2001, IFE's new side-scan sonar (ECHO) was used to locate and acoustically image selected shipwrecks in Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary and Underwater Preserve.

More than 100 shipwrecks dating back to the 1800s are suspected to rest in the Sanctuary; however, the locations of only 40 are known. The collection of shipwrecks in Thunder Bay is an historical archive of commerce in the Great Lakes and of the shipbuilding characteristic of the last century. The survey covered 342 square miles that were mapped and 70 underwater "targets" were located that could potentially be shipwrecks. Of these targets, 11 are known shipwrecks. Some of the shipwrecks that were imaged are: Monrovia, Grecian, Montana, Pewabic, New Orleans, E.B. Allen, D.R. Hanna, and Viator.
