Conservation in Action presents
Myth and Mystery of the Great White Shark
Seeing Deeper into the World of the White Shark

Since its release in 1975, the movie JAWS has made millions fearful of the elusive great white shark. Join Dr. Gregory Skomal, an accomplished marine biologist who has been actively involved in the study of sharks for more than 30 years, as he debunks the white sharks ‘killer’ reputation.

Tuesday, October 17  |  6:30 – 8:30 pm
Mystic Aquarium’s Main Gallery

Dive into the world of the white shark and discover the truth behind the history, biology and physiology of the species. Of the shark and ray species assessed by scientists for the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), 25% are threatened or near-threatened with extinction.

While white shark populations have been studied for many years in California, not much is known on the species’ presence along the east coast. With an influx of white sharks off the coast of Cape Cod since 2009, scientists have been able to study this shiver of sharks and gather valuable information on the population. Discover how Dr. Skomal’s work in Cape Code and use of new technologies are providing novel insights into this historically mysterious species.
