As part of her PhD dissertation, Dr. Laura Thompson, under the direction of Dr. Tracy Romano, Chief Scientist and Vice President of Biological Research at Mystic Aquarium developed a method to collect samples of respiratory vapor, or “blow,” from belugas. (Mystic, CT – Sept. 27, 2016) Today during a routine medical exam Mystic Aquarium staff discovered that the wayward manatee dubbed “Washburn” is pregnant. The 800 pound female was rescued by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) last Thursday in Falmouth, MA just before the water temperatures dropped to an uninhabitable 67 degrees Fahrenheit. Mystic, CT (September 23, 2016): Last evening, Mystic Aquarium’s Animal Rescue Program admitted a female Florida manatee to the John T. and Jane A. Wiederhold Foundation Veterinary and Animal Health Center.  The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) monitored, rescued and transported the manatee under a permit and with guidance from the US Fish and Wildlife Service.
