Saturday, February 10, 2018

As reported by Carey Richard, Mystic Aquarium’s Supervisor of Cetaceans and Pinnipeds February 4: Super Bowl Sunday!! Go Patriots!  It’s another good day with Tyonek.  It’s getting more challenging to think of new and exciting enrichment to do with him.  Today I played “rock band” for him; banging on a Rubbermaid container like a drum, while singing the Star Wars theme into a tube that was in the water.  Also playing him some... Beluga Rescue Collaboration: January 29- February 3, 2018

Sunday, February 4, 2018

As reported by Carey Richard, Mystic Aquarium’s Supervisor of Cetaceans and Pinnipeds January 29: I arrived in Seward after a long flight and overnight stay in Anchorage.  The ride to Seward looked a lot different than it did the last time I was here.  It was dark until about 8:30AM and there is so much snow!  When I was here in October, the Alaska SeaLife Center (ASLC) staff told us that as the snow moved down the mountain tops it made... Beluga Rescue Collaboration: January 21-23, 2018

Monday, January 29, 2018

As reported by Laurie Macha, Mystic Aquarium’s Curator of Mammals and Birds January 21, 2018: I started my shift a little early today so I could help with stretcher desensitizing (aka desense) during his 4pm bottle. Throughout his care veterinarians must take blood and perform other diagnostics on Tyonek to ensure that he remains healthy. A stretcher is used to obtain these diagnostics. So, as you can imagine, making the stretcher familiar... MORE »

Beluga Rescue Collaboration: January 24-28, 2018

Sunday, January 28, 2018

As reported by Laurie Macha, Mystic Aquarium’s Curator of Mammals and Birds January 24, 2018: Today’s shift was a very COLD one - it got to single digits toward the end of my night. When I arrived at Alaska SeaLife Center (ASLC) the wind was whipping so hard that it took my breath away. I found myself walking at an angle against the wind. With the cold temperatures and the wind, I planned enrichment to coincide with the feedings as... MORE »

Beluga Rescue Collaboration: January 19-20, 2018

Tuesday, January 23, 2018

As reported by Laurie Macha, Mystic Aquarium’s Curator of Mammals and Birds Saturday, January 19, 2018: I spent the entire day Friday traveling from CT to AK - arriving in Seward around 8:00pm. The drive from Anchorage to Seward on the Seward Highway continues to amaze me. Although it’s mostly dark in Alaska this time of year (10:00 am sunrise; 4:43 pm sunset), my drive through the Kenai Peninsula was nothing short of fantastic. The... MORE »

Beluga Rescue Collaboration: January 8-15, 2018

Friday, January 19, 2018

As reported by Jesse Ciletti, Mystic Aquarium’s Trainer of Cetaceans and Pinnipeds January 8-15, 2018: With only a few days left here at Alaska SeaLife Center, I am feeling pretty emotional. These past few weeks have been a great experience. Tyonek is doing really well. His last CT scan showed that an earlier lung problem is resolved; which is amazing news. We are now just doing some basic husbandry tests like blowhole and gastric... MORE »

Beluga Rescue Collaboration: January 7, 2018

Thursday, January 18, 2018

As reported by Jesse Ciletti, Mystic Aquarium’s Trainer of Cetaceans and Pinnipeds January 7, 2018: I arrived in Alaska on Friday, December 29; droving down to Seward the following morning. It had just snowed that day and the snowcapped mountains were just the Alaskan setting I had pictured in my mind! I also lucked out and got out of Mystic before the icy blizzard arrived! I met up with fellow trainer, Chrissy Metzger Barth at the... MORE »

Beluga Rescue Collaboration: December 28, 2017- January 2, 2018

Tuesday, January 2, 2018

As reported by Chrissy Metzger Barth, Mystic Aquarium’s Trainer of Cetaceans and Pinnipeds Dec. 28, 2017-Jan. 2, 2018: Tyonek continues to do well with his bottle feeds. He is practicing his vocalizations; even making new ones. On my shift, I was tasked with using the hydrophone (a specially designed underwater microphone) to record Tyonek’s vocalizations. The length and time of the recordings varied in order to record vocalizations made... MORE »

Beluga Rescue Collaboration: December 21-27, 2017

Friday, December 29, 2017

As reported by Chrissy Metzger Barth, Mystic Aquarium’s Trainer of Cetaceans and Pinnipeds December 21-27: Settling back into life in Alaska, my second week caring for Tyonek has been like a dream! I have almost mastered filleting fish and have gotten my formula making down to 30 minutes. This week we weighed Tyonek and he is up to 105.4kg (232lbs). Belugas always look pretty chunky but he is building quite the impressive blubber layer.... MORE »

Friday, December 22, 2017

As reported by Chrissy Metzger Barth, Mystic Aquarium’s Trainer of Cetaceans and Pinnipeds December 13-20: I arrived in Seward on the morning of December 13; excited to be back at the Alaska SeaLife Center (ASLC). I started out my career here in 2009, so I was ecstatic to be able to return to my first home. Without the opportunities the ASLC had given me and all the things their staff taught me over the years, I may have never had the... MORE »
