Mystic Aquarium

In this 60-minute program, one of our African penguin specialists will describe these remarkable birds, their care here at the aquarium and the special bond they form with their trainers. Participants learn about the history of the species and conservation issues affecting these intriguing animals. Click here to make a reservation.

During the Penguin Encounter, participants sit in a circle as an African penguin walks freely among the group, providing each person with a unique face-to-face penguin experience. Participants also get an opportunity to listen to the penguin's heartbeat, feel their soft feathers and ask the trainer questions.

In 2010, the African penguin was listed as an endangered species, so these animals need our help now more than ever before. Your participation in this program helps support Mystic Aquarium's crucial rescue efforts in South Africa.

Cost is $60 for non-members and $54 for members. Admission is not included. Participants must be at least 6 years of age. Children 6 to 12 years of age must be accompanied by an adult who has paid to participate in the encounter. This program takes place year-round.
