Key Statistics and information about the Marine Mammal and Sea Turtle Rescue Program

• Over 100 rescue calls come in annually to Mystic Aquarium
• There has been a dramatic increase in rescue calls since 1993 (14 that year)
• Majority of these live rescued animals would perish if left on the shore or untreated
• Mystic Aquarium & Institute for Exploration's Marine Mammal and Sea Turtle Rescue program is recognized as one of the most utilized and comprehensive in New England. This is based on response to rescue calls and the successful release rate of animals who have been rehabilitated in our facility
• The Marine Mammal and Sea Turtle Rescue program provides key insights not only on the health of our oceans, but human health issues as they relate to viral outbreaks and toxic algal bloom
• It can cost thousands of dollars to take care of just one injured or sick animal over a one month period (food, veterinary care, medicine and transport)
• Mystic Aquarium & Institute for Exploration's volunteer "first responder" network stretches all along the coast of Rhode Island, Connecticut and Fisher's Island, NY
• Mystic Aquarium has been responding to distressed marine mammals and sea turtles since 1976
