Spring Programs

 

Research Exploration Series: Classes are offered individually or book all 3 for a real in depth marine science career experience.

Members $20 per class; $35 for 2 classes; or $50 for all 3 classes

Non-members $28 per class; $50 for 2 classes; or $75 for all 3 classes

 

DO YOU WANT TO BE A MARINE BIOLOGIST?

Ages 14 to 17

Interested in one day becoming a marine biologist or working at an aquarium with animals such as seals, beluga whales, or penguins? Taking part in one of these fun-filled workshops will give you an idea of the many different career options related to marine biology that are essential to running an aquarium like ours. These exciting programs even offer a peek behind the scenes to see the facility in action.

Schedule: Saturday, March 28, 12:00pm-3:00pm or Saturday, May 9, 1:00pm-4:00pm

 

RESEARCHER FOR A DAY- HEMATOLOGY

Ages 14 to 17

How can a single drop of blood reveal important information on the health of an animal? Join Aquarium staff to learn the answer to this and much more as we test your laboratory skills and analyze marine mammal blood samples. This exciting program will even include a tour of the Aquarium’s state of the art research laboratories.

Schedule: Saturday, April 4, 1:00pm-4:00pm

 

RESEARCHER FOR A DAY- MOLECULAR BIOLOGY

Ages 14 to 17

Want to learn more about the work done in the research labs at the Mystic Aquarium and have a chance to clone a beluga whale gene? Join us as we transform our classroom into a molecular biology laboratory where you will have the opportunity to explore DNA and genetics with hands-on activities. At the end of the program you will come away with a greater understanding of biology, genetics and the research that is performed at the Aquarium – not to mention a photograph of the DNA you helped to create.

AQUA CAMP

Ages 13 to16

Does your teen have an interest in the field of marine biology, psychology, biology or animal science? Maybe they have thought about some day working at an aquarium. This camp will give your teen the inside look at what goes on behind the scenes everyday at the Aquarium and in the world of environmental conservation. There will be off site field trips to local habitats and a fun night filled adventure as you spend a night sleeping at the aquarium among the fishes.

Schedule: 

Week 1- July 27-30-
Monday 8:30am-4:00pm, Tuesday 8:30am-4:00pm, Wednesday 4:00pm –(overnight)- Thursday 12:00 noon
Week 2- August 3-6-
Monday 8:30am-4:00pm, Tuesday 4:00pm- (overnight)- Wednesday 12:00 noon, Thursday 8:30am-4:00pm

Cost: Members: $310 / Non-members: $355

PADDLIN’ TO THE SEA

Ages 13 to 16

Follow the Pawcatuck River downstream more than 35 miles by canoe! Along the way note changes in the environment, test water quality and watch aquatic wildlife. Sleeping is on the ground in same-sex camping tents at rustic campsites. Campers are responsible for camp stove cooking. Restrooms and showers are not available. This camp is led by educators from University of Rhode Island’s Environmental Education Center and Mystic Aquarium. Price includes meals, accommodations, camping and canoeing equipment. Participants must be able to swim at an intermediate level or better.
