Kodiak
Mystic Aquarium is one of four facilities in North America where you can actually view Steller Sea Lions. Kodiak is 9 years old and weighs just over 1,700 pounds. HE IS ENORMOUS and STILL GROWING! Male Steller Sea Lions can reach as much as 2,200 pounds, while females average close to 600 pounds.
Kodiak came to us from the Vancouver Aquarium, one of only five places that you can actually view Steller Sea Lions, the largest of all known Sea Lions. The other facilities include: Mystic Aquarium, Alaska Sea Life Center, the Oregon Zoo and the Harderwirjk Dolphinarium in Hol land.
What does Kodiak eat? Whatever he wants...Kodiak is fed three times a day. He eats by season with his highest food consumption in winter. Through the summer, which is traditionally Steller breeding season, Kodiak slims down and only consumes 50 pounds of fish per day!
Kodiak is partial to his toys. Most afternoons, Kodiak can be found sunning himself on a nearby rock, only a few feet away from his favorite play toys. |
