Mystic, CT (February 21, 2019): Registration for Mystic Aquarium summer camp is now open. Tailored for young explorers, animal and nature lovers and budding marine biologists, Mystic Aquarium summer camps are held annually June through August. Offering hands-on activities, up-close animal encounters, field trips and other fun and educational experiences, these camps are sought-after experiences for children ages 3 to 16.
Exceeding over 275 national standards relating to program content and quality, camper health and safety, and staff training, Mystic Aquarium summer camps are accredited by both the State of Connecticut as well as the American Camp Association.
Experts agree. The benefits of getting kids in nature can be seen on many levels – for body, mind and spirit – including such things as increased fitness levels, stronger critical thinking skills and enhanced social interactions. Data from the National Wildlife Federation (NWF), America’s oldest and largest conservation organization, indicates that “getting a little dirty in the great outdoors helps children lead happier, healthier lives.”
Mystic Aquarium summer camps promise plenty of outdoor time; from the field of the Sea School Green to the pathways of outdoor exhibits to the shores of Long Island Sound.
“While there are so many positive reasons for child development and education, the bottom line is our camps are also fun,” said Becky Hirsh, Outreach Program Manager and Camp Director.
Mystic Aquarium offers both half-day and full-day camps for younger children, while older campers have the opportunity to participate in overnight programs. There is even ‘extended day’ programming for various age groups for busy families.
Children entering PreK and Kindergarten are constantly engaged and learning through stories, activities, crafts and live animal encounters. Campers entering grades 1-3 also learn through hands-on activities, crafts and games while also experiencing behind-the-scenes visits and field trips.
Mystic Aquarium is proud to collaborate with like-minded organizations including Mystic Seaport Museum and Project Oceanology to provide unique opportunities that allow campers entering grades 4-6 to learn about local species and habitats in a variety of settings. Plus, new for 2019 is Junior Aquarium Careers.
The aptly named Aquarium Fun is also new for 2019. For kids entering grades 1-6, this three-day adventure includes tours behind-the-scenes and unique animal experiences as well as meet and greets with Aquarium animal care professionals. Mystic Aquarium offers advanced camps for aspiring Marine Scientist entering grades 7-10 that provide a wide-variety of experiences for in-depth learning of conservation efforts.
There is even a full complement of summer camps for students in Western Massachusetts; provided in conjunction with Springfield College.
A complete list of camps including program summaries is available at MysticAquarium.org.
Education is at the core of Mystic Aquarium’s mission to inspire people to care for and protect the ocean planet.
