Mystic, Conn. (September 13, 2018): In September, Mystic Aquarium is proud to host two unique new programs specifically for valued educators in Rhode Island. The RI Teacher’s Challenge and Educator Appreciation Day seek to highlight not only the importance of ocean conservation but also the significant impact that teachers have in shaping the next generation.
“Every day, Mystic Aquarium educators connect with students of all ages to practice science-based conservation in fun and engaging ways,” said Kelly Matis, Mystic Aquarium’s Vice President of Education and Conservation. “It is our goal to have some fun with the amazing teachers as well, as they have such a great impact on their students each day.”
Mystic Aquarium strives to recognize the dedication of the teachers in the local area by hosting the fifth Annual Educator Appreciation Day on Sunday, September 23, 2018, from 9:00am – 5:00pm.
As our special thank you, educators along with one guest will receive complimentary admission to enjoy the Aquarium for the day including the Arctic Coast featuring New England’s only beluga whales plus the new Jurassic Giants and Discover Long Island Sound exhibits. Falling on National Estuary Day, educators and their guest will also experience special table-top displays and presentations.
Teachers are encouraged to visit Mystic Aquarium classrooms to learn about free educator resources and school programs, meet outreach animals and more. Open to all teachers in New England and beyond, pre-registration is strongly recommended. Additional details can be found by visiting MysticAquarium.org/events/.
As part of Educator Appreciation Day, Mystic Aquarium will also kick-off a unique event exclusively for Rhode Island Teachers.
“We are continually developing unique opportunities to work with kids to foster conservation- minded citizens of the future,” continued Matis. “Teachers undoubtedly share the same passion.”
Beginning on September 23, in conjunction with Educator Appreciation Day, K-12 educators will be invited to share a photo of how they bring the Ocean State into their classroom. Entries will be accepted online Sunday, September 23 through Wednesday, October 17. All submissions will be placed in an album on Mystic Aquarium’s Facebook page; the image receiving the most ‘likes’ will win.
The winning RI teacher will receive a complimentary in-classroom NGSS lesson and traveling animal touch experience including our traveling animals. Plus, the winning teacher receives a complimentary animal encounter.
Mystic Aquarium seeks to inspire people to care for and protect the ocean planet through conservation, education and research. While education is at the heart of Mystic Aquarium’s mission, teachers are at the heart of education. Whether it’s Mystic Aquarium’s own team of instructors and traveling teachers or Rhode Island’s finest educators, each lesson taught can have a strong and lasting impact.
