Run for a cause.

People run races for many different reasons – whether it’s a personal goal, for training purposes or simply for the cool medals.  I’m running this weekend’s Run/Walk for the Penguins because I’m on a mission! Well, Mystic Aquarium is on a mission and, as an 11 year employee, I believe strongly in our efforts to inspire others to protect our ocean plant.

My job at Mystic Aquarium is truly unique.  I work with many individuals within many departments (they keep me running on any given day, not just on race day!).

I have the privilege of working with some of the most dedicated, hardworking, caring, and intelligent people.  Day-in and day-out, my co-workers put their hearts and souls into what they do.  They do this to not only provide our animals with world-class care, not simply to make this organization the best it can be, but to convey our mission through conservation, education and research.

There is a quote by an environmentalist named Baba Dioum who once said, “In the end, we will conserve only what we love, we will love only what we understand, and we will understand only what we are taught.”

Every day my colleagues are teaching people to love, understand and conserve – frogs, fish, beluga whales and, of course, penguins.

The Run/Walk for the Penguins supports our endangered African penguin colony. This species could go extinct within our lifetime.  Think about that!  This run may not change the plight of the African penguins, but it is a call to action, a step closer, which is what this organization is all about.

Join me Saturday, October 14th as we put our best foot forward to save the African penguins.
