National Volunteer Month – Katy Freeman

My name is Katy, and I am a volunteer in…

My name is Katy, and I am a volunteer in the Herpetology and Fish & Invertebrates department, as well as the Education department at Mystic Aquarium. I help the staff care for the aquarium’s collection of reptiles and amphibians, and assist with various educational programs.

For as long as I can remember, I have loved reptiles, so I was elated when I got the opportunity to volunteer in the herpetology department about a year-and-a-half ago. I still learn new things every day from working with these wonderful animals and the extraordinarily knowledgable staff. It is an honor to be able to work with such a dedicated, hard-working, and passionate team of people. They have taught me, and continue to teach me, so many things that I use not only at the aquarium and within the field, but also within many other aspects of my life.

One of my favorite parts about volunteering is getting to talk to guests and educate them about our animals. I love having one-on-one conversations with guests that have so many questions and show a genuine interest in the animals. There is nothing more gratifying and rewarding than seeing young kids with the desire to learn and make a difference too.
