AMERICAN HUMANE ASSOCIATION CERTIFICATION
I am pleased to announce that Mystic Aquarium has been certified by the American Humane Association under a new program that evaluates the health and welfare of animals in zoos and aquariums.
The inspection and audit for the certification took place last week and we were informed yesterday.
Two years ago Mystic Aquarium joined a consortium of aquariums and asked the American Humane Association, the oldest humane society in the nation, to develop a specialized certification process for our institutions. American Humane Association is the largest certifier of the welfare of animals in working, entertainment and other environments.
Called, Humane Certified™ Seal of Approval, the standards are science based and were established by some of the most eminent animal welfare specialists in the nation, including our own Chief Scientist, Dr. Tracy Romano.
This new certification augments other evaluation processes that we utilize including accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and the Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums as well as regular inspections from federal regulators. It represents one more external review of our work in caring for precious animal lives.
Special thank you and congratulations to Senior Vice President Larry Rivarde and his amazing staff who are directly responsible for Mystic Aquarium receiving this award.
ROSEMARY WALES PARKER
This week I had the privilege of sitting down for a few minutes with Admissions Representative Rosemary Wales Parker. Rosemary has been a member of our team since 1982.
She is always warm, kind and smiling. She greets guests, staff and volunteers with an endearing and sincere smile. It was a nice opportunity to catch up on news of her grown children and grandchildren.
Next time you see Rosemary be sure to say hello and wish her congratulations on her upcoming anniversary, 35 years of service to Mystic Aquarium.
PENGUINS AND THE SEASON
I want to share with you a wonderful holiday card that I received from Chairman of the President’s Council, Dr. Joseph M. Cronin. It really captures the spirit of our community during this holiday season and all year round.
What a great thrill to have the man of the season himself come by the office for a visit. Santa asked me if I had been good or bad this year. I told him he would have to email the Board of Trustees for an answer on that.
As we chatted it occurred to me, for just a minute, that Santa bears a striking resemblance to another beloved member of our team, Wayne Sander.
My very best wishes to you and your loved ones for a wonderful and safe holiday. See you all soon!
