Dear Friend: Cheryl Miller Photos Recognized by Association of Zoos and Aquariums A few years ago I asked long time member of our team, Cheryl Miller, to assist me temporarily as manager of the President’s Office. Cheryl’s passions are, respectively, animals, photography and working in marketing. It was a hard sell, but I asked her to take on the role of Director of Operations for the President’s Office permanently and she agreed... MORE »

All the long hours and hard work that I have been putting in each day paid off tenfold today. I was one of the lucky ones who had the chance to go on a big release for some of the rehabilitated African penguin chicks. When we arrived at the rehab center in the morning, the 34 penguins were preparing to head home were given their final check-up. During this, their identification tags were removed, measurements were taken and transponders were... MORE »

What a busy weekend! The past few days have been very action packed. The rehabilitators at SANCCOB are some of the hardest working people I have ever met. I am in awe of how much gets accomplished in a single day in order to provide these vulnerable animals with the best chance of survival. If the routine wasn’t hectic enough, it seems like the phone is constantly ringing with new leads on animals in need of assistance. While African... MORE »

Twenty new African penguin chicks have arrived at SANCCOB over the past two days! They were brought in from the colony in Simon’s Town, South Africa having been abandoned by their parents. Simon’s Town is where you can find the famous Boulder’s Beach- one of the two mainland colonies of African penguins here in South Africa. The other is located two hours south of Cape Town at Stony Point. When a new penguin is admitted to SANCCOB it is... MORE »

Dear Friend: RESOLUTION Mystic Aquarium has been rehabilitating a Kemp’s ridley sea turtle named Resolution, which stranded due to cold stunning on Dec 31, 2015. The turtle also had a beak injury that required healing. Resolution will be flying South tomorrow to complete its rehabilitation at the Georgia Sea Turtle Center. This is the facility that rescued and rehabilitated our very own green sea turtle Charlotte prior to her placement... MORE »

It’s volunteer appreciation day at SANCCOB today! The staff honored all of the people who donate their time to help carry out its important mission. They did so by hosting an afternoon braai, or a South African barbecue. At the event both the volunteer coordinator and the director spoke to express their appreciation to the volunteers who come from near and far; recognizing the importance of the support of the “amazing volunteer base” in... Today was another busy day in pen 10! Other Mystic Aquarium staff who have had this opportunity have told me about their experiences at SANCCOB and about the hard work that is involved, but it's difficult to truly understand until you are in the middle of it all. To help you get a feel for what it's like raising over 130 African penguin chicks here is the schedule of today's routine: 7:45AM Morning meeting - everyone is assigned to their... MORE »

It's 75 degrees and sunny with a slight breeze in Cape Town, South Africa; making my second day at SANCCOB even more enjoyable! I received a tour of the whole SANCCOB facility which helped me more completely understand how they operate. It's amazing to me that I have worked with these animals for a few years now yet there is so much that I am still learning! The main building of SANCCOB contains a few different spaces - there is a large area... MORE »

After several flights and many hours of travel, I finally arrived at Table View in the early morning. Table View is a suburb of Cape Town where SANCCOB is located. A few hours later I was ready to begin! On the walk over to SANCCOB, I was provided spectacular views of Table Mountain across the South Atlantic Ocean. It was exciting to know that this area is home to the African penguin. They inhabit two mainland colonies and a chain of islands on... MORE »
