Mystic Aquarium’s Animal Rescue Program Helps Young Pups Abandoned at Birth

Mystic, Conn. (September 13, 2016) – This morning, Blue Shutters Beach in Charlestown, RI welcomed over 200 people with sun, surf, and a few special guests.

Mystic Aquarium’s Animal Rescue Team released half a dozen harbor seal pups back to their ocean environment. As part of Aquarium Animal Rescue Team tradition, the six pups were named for this year’s theme of minerals and rocks: Jett, Amethyst, Quartz, Obsidian, Amber and Sapphire.

The six pups were found along various coastal areas in Maine and were considered to have been abandoned shortly after birth, which is not uncommon in the harbor seal population. They were each rescued by Marine Mammals of Maine and were then transferred to Mystic Aquarium’s Animal Rescue Clinic between April 25 and May 31 for care.

Deemed healthy and prepared for life at sea, the pups took their time exploring the new surroundings before slowly making their way to the ocean for the first time.
