DEBRIS CLEANED OFF LOCAL ROADWAYS DURING MYSTIC-WIDE CLEANUP
A Cooperative Effort of Mystic Aquarium, Mystic Seaport & the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center
Mystic, Conn. (May 27, 2016): Local community partners Mystic Aquarium, Mystic Seaport and the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center joined forces this afternoon to host a town-wide, large-scale debris removal event as part of Long Island Sound Day. Staff and volunteers from the three intuitions removed hundreds of pounds of debris from Coogan Boulevard, River Road, Jerry Browne Road and Route 27. Stonington High School took up the task of cleaning the coastal recreational area on Stonington Road.
Debris ranged from paper debris and bottles to small household items and automobile tires-all removed from local roads in Mystic.
The ultimate goal of the Mystic-Wide Cleanup is to increase public knowledge of and appreciation for Long Island Sound and its natural resources and to engage members of the public as partners in addressing threats to the health of this critical ecosystem.
